| Week 2 saw the arrival of the newly promoted Slammers to
Alexandra College. Following an extremely successful season
going 13-1 and winning a very tough Division 1, the Slammers
would have being looking forward to giving the Premiership a
good go this time after only lasting one season on their
previous trip to Prem 1. But an off season of team bonding saw
half the girls up the duff and with the untimely departure of
Erin Subuski to greener pastures, it looks like they will struggle to
survive again this time, and following a 33-1 rout at the hands
of the Renegades, the Slammers could be forgiven for expecting
the worst. But when you think a team is down and out they
usually pick themselves up off the floor and kick you in the
ass. And that's what nearly happened! |

The game started with Sean the Slammers CF hitting a nice
double into centre field and was scored when Stephen singled in
right. But the Dynamoe defence settled down after that, taking
the next two batters in order to close out the top of the first.
Ken lead of the bottom of the first a slammed triple over the LF
head, Noeleen walked, JC and Ruth hit singles, everything going
to plan. NO. Carl hits a fielders choice and then two batters
latter, Derek grounds into a double play, Martin Long playing at
short for the Slammers, picked up the hard hit ball, ran to
second him self and fired to one for the double. The Dynamoes
were up 3-1 but it should have been more. |
|
| The next 3 innings were painful. Neither team knew what a
bat was for. In the second Dodder tried to turn the screw, but
after hitting three singles in a row, we batted into two
fielders choices to end the inning and only added one run.
In the third Sean and Stephen teamed up again, Sean getting on
with a nice single and Stephen add another RBI to his account.
But again more quick outs and the Dynamoes were up again.
Derek lead off, got on due to an error and was scored
from one with a slap shot into centre field by Patrick, and just
as well he scored because Janice grounded into another double
play to end the inning. |

In the 5th things started to get a little better. Ken hit a
solo home run to help settle nerves, a double by Noels and
singles by Ruth, Carl and Julie put a few more runs on the
board. But again more quick outs and more missed opportunities.
Sadly the game was about to come to an early end, and for all
the wrong reasons. The Slammers started the 6th brightly getting
Martin and Ray on base. After a single into right field Ray had
an opportunity to run. He rounded two and got to third
comfortably only to find himself turning the corner and thinking
about going home. The Dynamoe infield still hadn't gained
control of the ball and Ray took off. Derek finally got the ball
and turned to face Ray, who froze half way up the line. As Derek
advanced quickly, Ray had a decision to make, it was an equal
distance to both bags. |
|
| In an instant Ray made up his mind and went for home, but
what he didn't realise was that it was going to take five hours
and a trip to A&E to get there.
Ray hadn't figured out was what to do when he got there. What
was to follow was ugly. As the ball came in Ray dived, slid, one
hopped, what ever it was, it wasn't right. He slammed himself
head first into home and dislocated his shoulder in the process.
Luckily for Ray they reset his shoulder fairly quickly but he
had to wait five hours for an X ray.
The brave Slammers decided to call it quits. It was a pity
because they deserved a lot more from the game. Martin was
outstanding at short and Sean had a great night with the bat
going 3 for 3, and scoring twice. Dodder were left to try and
figure out what happen to their batting from the Flyers blitz at
the weekend.
Next up Diamond Dogs, who always give us a hard game. |
